Succi 26, first state (of four)
A very fine and atmospheric impression of the first state, before the number, plate 9 from the series of 22, with broad margins, some nicks and tiny teats along the edges in excellent untreated condition
While primarily a painter, Michele Marieschi did produce a small number of etchings. His most successful prints are those from the series Magnificentiores Selectioresque Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus which consists of 22 views of Venice, to which the present etching belongs. Prints from this series stand out in the artist’s printed œuvre for their highly atmospheric quality; with his refined etching needle, Marieschi manages to bring La Serenissima and its inhabitants to life. The present print depicts the Santa Maria della Salute across the grand canal on which gondolas are gliding by. Like many in many other prints from the series, the viewer is drawn into the composition through the gondolas and figures in the foreground.
