A male nude in an artist’s studio

black chalk, traces of graphite
numbered ‘No: I’ and ‘128’
29.2 x 21.2 cm

Forcefully executed in black chalk, this sheet depicts an academic nude surrounded by attributes from an artist’s studio. While generally drawn with confidence and skill - note the well-rendered foreshortening in the plaster cast lying on the floor - some other areas, such as the drapery, are rather stiff, indicating that the sheet was drawn by an artist in training at an academy. The subject matter, of course, was one that students repeatedly drew during their academic training. Interestingly, the composition is framed by a drawn frame adding a trompe-l'oeil effect to the drawing.
